Nessun piano particolare, no!

Nino Colaianni

Interview with Nick Allbrock (Pond)

Nick, your collective was initially a free-form band, but now the songs have a more defined song structure. As a producer, how did you guide this process in the studio, and do you have any anecdotes from those days to share?

I am pretty terrible at the ‘guiding’ side of things I think, so when it was open to anyone popping in I had very limited capacity to be assertive and say, for example, “your guitar is 10000 times too loud and you’re playing the wrong notes and it sounds like shit”. I just kind of let it run, because I had (have) very little confidence that what I’m doing is any good anyway. When we were making our second album the studio was just full of people and everyone kept bringing in a carton of coopers green beers as a sort of offering. I don’t think Joe has been able to stomach it since. We had like 4 guitars going and synth and organ and someone playing a saw – some bits sound like they have a direction but one of the songs was literally called Ascending where the direction was just “go up a note every 8 bars until we get back to the start then we just go crazy and make shitloads of noise”. Obviously it’s a modern classic.

In the last albums, the composition of the songs has mainly been handled from you and Jay Watson. What was your contribution to the making of “Stung!”?

I’d say James Ireland also has a heap to do with the composition. Him and Jay have actual music school training, and James is getting properly experienced in the production role, so they have amazing dialogues about, you know, the chord inversion needing to change so that the bridge doesn’t feel bigger than the chorus… or something like that. I kind of come in with the dumb-dumb version of a song… like, the high school version. If you simplified the songs back to be able to teach them to year 7 guitar students, it would probably sound similar to how I first wrote them. Then James and Jay add some clever chords and stuff so it’s not just straight busker vibes. Apart from that I write lyrics and play some guitar and flute. Also, Shiny Joe contributes a lot to composition, so we all have a big role in the end.

In the press release for “Stung!”, I read that you describe it as an album inspired by Fleetwood Mac and Prince. I’ve heard echoes of Bowie from the “Let’s Dance” era. Do you agree?

Yeah for sure! I’m guessing you’re thinking of So Lo here and yes, totally, it’s got a big David “coco-blowies” Bowie funk vibe to it. The Mac and Prince influence is largely that they made Tusk and Sign ‘o The Times which are both big messy overblown over ambitious double albums, which are often my favourite albums.

In your career as a musician, you’ve also experienced the pre-liquid music era, when you sold millions of records. How do you assess the current state of the music business?

I think we juuuuust missed out on the selling millions of records bit! With Tame Impala we were supporting MGMT at the beginning and they sold a gazillion CD copies of Oracular Spectacular, and I swear that was the last dying gasp of that era. It’s a different vibe now isn’t it? It’s sort of expected that you’ll have unfettered access to whatever music you want, all the time, immediately.

A personal curiosity: I’m a big fan of the 90s Seattle band called Pond. Were you aware of their existence?

We were not, but became aware of them pretty quickly after the band started. But no, our access to the internet and the history of all human information wasn’t what it is now when Pond started, so we were just bumbling along without a care in the world.

Finally, do you have any plans for new recordings or live performances in your work as a musician, songwriter, or producer?

Not huge plans, no! I’m really enjoying working with the rest of Pond though, so we’ll keep making those records for a bit I reckon.

Link:

AllMusic

Stung!
